Don McGlashan at Memo Oct 14, 2022

Until Friday night I hadn’t had the chance to see him perform live. And that show had been re-scheduled twice …. But he didn’t disappoint. Now in his early 60s, Don has had a varied career in music & as a teenager thought he’d end up playing French horn in an orchestra. He started out as an instrumentalist, has done lots of soundtrack work & didn’t form the band he is best known for, the Mutton Birds until he was 29.

Don at Memo

I suspect there were lots of Kiwis in the audience at Memo who knew his songs from the Mutton Birds catalogue & from his time in Blam, Blam, Blam. He sang his best known like Dominion Rd plus lots of new ones. His lyrics are beautiful, strong & keep you listening. I hadn’t thought about li-los for a long time, but there they were in a new song about the beach.

On stage he was accompanied by Anita Clark on violin, keys, mandolin & BVs.

His new CD Bright November Morning debuted at No.1 on the NZ Recorded Music Album Charts. It is now for sale in Oz.
